Northern Beaches Overpass | PerfArt Project

Project Completion: 2019

October 1, 2020

Stoddart was engaged by Ferrovial York (now Ferrovial Agroman) to provide perforated anti-throw screens to both Hilmer and Forest Way pedestrian overpasses crossing Warringah Road in Frenches Forest in New South Wales. Both of the bridges allow for safe passage of pedestrian and cycle traffic across the busy Warringah Road. The Hilmer intersection gives direct access to the Northern Beaches Hospital.

The screen panels were specified and manufactured from anodised quality aluminium plate - 5mm thick and anodised in the colour Spanish Silver. The panels were folded as a cassette type system to conceal fixings and bolted to structural steel posts. Stoddart incorporated 3D surveying and drafting techniques to ensure the panels were accurately manufactured to suit the geometry of the bridge and structural steel work. The end result was flawless.

The perforated pattern was specified by the architect/designer AECOM, whom Stoddart worked closely with to ensure the design intent was achieved. The perforations graduate in hole size, providing a ‘fading’ effect along the span, with smaller holes increasing to larger holes at the midpoint of the bridges. Both bridges utilise the same perforated pattern.

There is approximately 315m² of perforated panel cladding the Forest Way overpass and 255m² for Hilmer. All panels were manufactured in Stoddart’s Brisbane based factory, and carefully crated and shipped to site for installation.
